A man they called the "Homeless Hero" is once again in the spotlight. This time he didn't save a life, he's fighting to save his own.

"There was a bit of a party going on there, music was loud, they were arguing quiet a bit," said William Woodcock, who lives across the hall from 45-year-old Faron Hall.

Hall remains in the critical care unit at the Health Sciences Centre with serious head injuries after he was severely beaten inside his 11th floor apartment suite.

Police say around 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Hall was allegedly assaulted following an argument with another man and a woman.

"There was a piece of furniture that was broken that was used in the assault as well as a beating by the two involved people," said Winnipeg Police Constable Jacqueline Chaput.

The suspects fled but police say the woman involved returned to the building to tell security Hall was badly hurt. Police were called to the scene, where the woman was arrested.

Last year, Hall made national headlines after he saved not one, but two people from drowning when they fell into the Red River just months apart. After being awarded for his bravery Hall tried to turn his life around. He got off the street and checked into rehab but friends say recently he returned to his old habits.

"They've been boozing it up for the last two or three days," said Woodcock.

"He brings lots of people here that are no good, bad bad friends," said Raymond Lambert who lives on the same floor as Hall.

31-year-old Geraldine Colomb has been charged with aggravated assault and remains in custody. The second suspect has not been found.
