Bomb scare shuts down Portage Avenue

WINNIPEG - A police investigation involving a car crash and a suspicious package tied up traffic on one of Winnipeg’s busiest routes during rush hour Monday morning.

Officers closed Portage Avenue westbound at Valour Road and eastbound at Empress Street after a vehicle collision at about 7:00 in the area of Portage and Strathcona Street, just east of Polo Park Shopping Centre.

Police say they found a suspicious package inside one of the vehicles and called in the bomb squad.

A command post was set up by the Fire Department in the 1300 block of Portage Avenue, and police bomb squad experts were expected to deploy a robot to inspect the suspicious package later Monday morning.

Employees in nearby businesses were asked to remain inside and remain away from the front of their buildings.
