Wednesday night a four year old boy was abducted from the driveway of a Tuxedo home while his mother dashed to the front door to pick up his sister from piano lessons.

“Usually it’s a very quiet neighborhood, you see people walking with the dogs and the kids,” said Christian Hansch, neighbour.

“Upon arrival the victim exited her vehicle leaving the keys in the ignition and her young son in the rear seat,” said Jason Michalyshen, Winnipeg Police.

While she was still standing at the front door, the mom turned back as the car took off down the street and rounded the corner. She chased it for a moment and turned back to call the police.

The mother actually spotted the suspect in a red SUV parked across the street. She thought he was just another parent dropping off a child, she never imagined he would take hers.

“Never something like that has happened here, it’s the first time,” said Hansch.

The car thief abandoned the vehicle less than a block from where he stole it. The four year old was found by a neighbor near the vehicle and was reunited with his mom and sister.

The entire incident took just 10 minutes, but police say its a warning to all drivers and parents.

“It just did take moments for this individual to approach that vehicle get inside and drive away,” said Michalyshen, Winnipeg Police.
