From the mouths of WAGs

The term 'WAG' was coined by the British press during the last World Cup in 2006 to describe the pack of beautiful women who would accompany the players and watch soccer games from the sidelines. Now, the WAGs (wives and girlfriends of players) get just as much tabloid attention in Europe as their soccer-playing men, as much for their good looks and expensive clothing as their interesting (and often dim-witted) comments.
