A bizarre standoff in a downtown Winnipeg neighbourhood has ended, after police arrested a man on the roof of a house and brought him to the ground in the bucket of a fire department ladder.

The man occupied the roof of a house in the 400 block of Bannatyne Avenue Tuesday morning and threw a heavy block at workers who were there to demolish the building.  One man was hit in the head – he told Global News he was wearing his hard hat at the time and was not injured.

Police say the man also threw a block at a construction vehicle.

The house belongs to Ed Ackerman, the former owner of another building known as Alphabet House on Gertie Street which was demolished last October. Ackerman is also a former mayoral candidate and has fought with the city to prevent demotion of some of his other properties.
