Canadian track and field championships notebook
TORONTO — Dana Buchanan of Beachburg, Ont., set a Canadian track and field championships record in the 3,000 women’s steeplechase Friday, finishing in 10:13.04.
Buchanan was more than four seconds faster than Danelle Woods’s time of 10:17.24 in 2007. Meredith Macgregor (10:16.94) also came in under the old record.
Elsewhere:
• Alex Genest of Sherbrooke, Que., won the 3,000 men’s steeplechase in 8:36.11, beating defending champion Robin Watson (8:44.43).
• Taylor Stewart, 18, of London, Ont., placed third in the men’s long jump, just one week after winning bronze at the world junior track and field championships in Moncton, N.B.
Stewart jumped 7.43 metres to finish behind Christopher Greenaway (7.56) and last year’s Canadian champion, Brian Chibudu of Ottawa (7.46).
• Tabia Charles of Pickering, Ont., set a championship record and just missed her Canadian record in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 13.94 metres. She jumped 13.96 in May.
Charles will compete in the long jump Saturday, another event where she holds the Canadian record (6.82 metres).
Jacob Zorzella of Toronto won the men’s triple jump for the second straight year with a best jump of 15.47 metres.
• Julie Labonte of Ste-Justine, Que., retained her shot put title with a throw of 16.32 metres. The distance surpassed her winning distance last year (14.96 metres) but fell short of the Canadian record 17.83 metres, set by Lieja Tunks in 2007.
• Krista Woodward of New Westminster, B.C., won the women’s javelin (53.53 metres),
• Mike Ransky of London, Ont., won the men’s discus (53.24), and Matthew Doherty took the men’s hammer 67.06).
• Canadian record-holder Adam Kunkel of Paisley, Ont., qualified for the men’s 400-metre hurdles final, which will run Saturday. Kunkel finished second in Friday’s qualifying round with a time of 52.54 seconds. Gabriel El Hanbli of Repentigny, Que., was first in 51.62 seconds. Kunkel, a three-time Canadian champion, covered the distance in 48.24 in 2007.
• Nicole Forrester of Aurora, Ont., won gold in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.90 metres ä
• Jared Connaughton of New Haven, P.E.I., won the men’s 200 metres in 20.66 seconds, 0.32 off his Canadian record.
• Adrienne Power of Halifax three-peated as the women’s 200-metre champion in 23.47 seconds.
• Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ont., won the men’s 5,000 metres in 14:03.25, while Megan Metcalfe of Edmonton (16:45.44) was the women’s champion.
