TORONTO –Super Bowl XLVI is ready to kick off this Sunday, with the New York Giants and New England Patriots both vying for the Lombardi Trophy.

Famous costume malfunctions (who can forget that, Janet Jackson?) and national anthem blunders are not the only way to capture the audience’s attention. Advertisers attempt to be creative and memorable through 30-second long ad spots, which are said to cost advertisers $3.5 million—or a mere $116,666.66 per second—this year.

Global News takes a look at the best Super Bowl commercials from the last decade.

The Force: Volkswagen commercial, 2010
During last year’s Super Bowl, a commercial featuring a young boy dressed up as Darth Vader became an instant viral hit and became the most-watched Super Bowl spot on YouTube last year.
According to New York Times, Volkswagen will continue with the Star Wards theme at this year’s Super Bowl. The famous Darth Vader boy is not expected to return.
Reebok, 2003
Four words: Refill the coffee pot.

Betty White Snickers, 2010
During the 2010 Super Bowl, Betty White, one of America’s most beloved comedic actresses, appeared as a football player in an ad for Snickers. After getting tackled in the mud, White responds, “That’s not what your girlfriend says!” when a player accuses her of “playing like Betty White” on field.

Budweiser 9/11 tribute, 2002
In 2002, Budweiser paid tribute to the fallen heroes in the September 11 attacks. The commercial only aired once, but it often makes the list as one of the greatest Super Bowl ads of all time.
Matthew Broderick’s Day Off, 2012
This one easily is one of our favourite Super Bowl commercials from the past decade.
From the director of “The Hangover,” Todd Phillips brings us a taste of actor Matthew Broderick as one of our favourite 80’s hero, Ferris Bueller.
The two-and-a-half minute Honda CR-V Super Bowl commercial does a great job of recreating the day Ferris had a day off in the 1986 film, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
